Here is a selection of local events with approximate times of year:

  • January/ February: Thaipooyam, birthday of Lord Muruga, celebrated in various places including Nedungolam with ritual piercings and processions
  • February: Local Boat Race held on Paravur Lake
  • March: Atham Festival, Mahavishnu Temple, Nedungolam. A temporary bridge is made from boats to allow access across the river to the temple.
  • March: Parippally Gajamela (elephant procession)
  • April: Meena Bharani festival, celebrated locally at Paravur Puttingal Devi Temple with a fireworks display on the last day.
  • April: Vishu - the Malayalam New Year
  • August: Nehru Trophy Boat Race, Alappuzha
  • August/ September: Onam - a ten day festival unique to Kerala
