According to Ayurveda, Panchakarma is the purification and detoxification of the body. “Panchakarma”, a Sanskrit word means five therapeutic treatments which eliminate toxins and support the natural rhythms of the body.
The three doshas (biological energies) Vata – composed of space and air, Pitha- of fire and water & Kapha- of earth and water are the functional units of the body. Hectic lifestyle, irregular diet schedule and stressful living environment lead to the accumulation of impurities in the body tissues .This results in the imbalance of the energies, which eventually weakens our systems and causes many diseases. Therefore periodic elimination of these toxins helps the body to maintain its equilibrium. This therapy is called ‘Shodhana’.
Five therapies in Panchakarma are Vamana, Virechana, Nasya & Vasti (split into Kashaya vasti and Sneha vasti)
Vamana is a medicated emesis treatment which discards Kapha impurities accumulated in the body and the respiratory tract.
Virechana is medicated cleansing therapy which helps to shed Pitha toxins collected in liver and gallbladder.
Vasti cleanses impurities gathered from all the 3 doshas: Vata, Pitha and Kapha, through the colon.
Nasya applies oil infused with ayurvedic medicine through nose to remove accumulated Kapha impurities from the head and neck area.
