Kerala Honeymoon Itinerary: 5 Days of Backwaters, Hills & Heritage
Why Kerala Is Perfect for Honeymoon Travel
Kerala honeymoons are known for houseboats, scenic hills, and great food.
Kerala does this. It pulls couples out of planning mode and into actual presence — which is, if we're being honest, the whole point of a honeymoon.
Kerala runs along India’s southwestern coast. Despite its compact size, the state offers incredible variety. You have the old colonial port of Kochi in the north, the quiet backwater town of Kollam in the south, the hill station of Munnar rising through the Western Ghats — and connecting all of it, a landscape of coconut palms, paddy fields, rivers, and forest that just doesn't stop being beautiful.
Five days here gives you the shape of it. You’ll still see the best of Kerala.
Day 1: Arrival in Kochi and Heritage Exploration
Stay: Fort Kochi
After arriving in Kochi, explore Fort Kochi’s spice markets and historic streets. It’s ideal for couples. The neighbourhood has a number of converted heritage properties — old merchant houses turned into guesthouses, some of them run by the same families who've owned them for generations. That context matters. A heritage stay in Fort Kochi feels like a different experience than checking into a business hotel lobby.
Day 1 should be slow. You've just travelled. Don't overcorrect with a full activity schedule.
In the evening, visit the Chinese fishing nets and Dutch Palace.
Dinner on Princess Street or Burgher Street. These are the main strips in the Fort Kochi heritage area and both have good options. Karimeen — pearl spot fish, cooked in banana leaf or fried — is the dish to order here. It's local in the way that actually means something.
If you can book a Kathakali performance for the evening, do it before you leave home. The makeup process runs 45 minutes before the show starts and it's oddly compelling to watch up close. A performer's face becoming a character, slowly, using pigment and technique and time. The performance itself runs about an hour after that.
Day 2: Romantic Backwater Stay in Kollam
Stay: Kollam / backwater property
Kollam is a peaceful backwater town known for scenic Ashtamudi Lake.
This is where the trip shifts pace. Kochi has energy, history, movement. Kollam slows everything down.
Check into your backwater stay and enjoy peaceful lake views from your room or balcony. Spend the afternoon relaxing on the water. A private sunset boat cruise on Ashtamudi Lake is one of those experiences that photographs well but is actually better in person — the lake opens wide in places, the light moves across it in ways that a camera doesn't quite catch, and being out on the water in the early evening, away from roads and noise, does something genuinely calming.
Dinner back at the property. Many backwater stays serve traditional Kerala meals with beautiful lake views.
Day 3: Houseboat Experience and Sunset Cruise
Stay: Traditional kettuvallam houseboat, overnight on the water
A houseboat stay is a Kerala honeymoon highlight, with comfortable rooms and fresh meals onboard.
Board by midday. Your cook will have been at the market since early morning. Whatever comes out of the kitchen for lunch — eaten on deck while the backwaters move past — will almost certainly be better than anything you could have ordered at a restaurant that day.
The boat moves through Ashtamudi and into the canals beyond. The canal sections are where you see everyday Kerala life. Kids cycling home from school on narrow raised paths. Someone's front yard ending three feet from the water. Watch local life along the backwaters and enjoy peaceful views from the houseboat. Relax on deck during the sunset cruise.
The boat stays overnight in a quiet area away from the busy routes. The dark is real dark — no town glow bleeding in from anywhere. The silence is the kind most people don't get access to in normal life.
One practical note, and it matters: do not book the cheapest houseboat you can find. The difference between a basic boat and a well-run premium one is significant — in privacy, in food quality, in where the boat anchors. This is your honeymoon. Book properly, and book at least three months ahead for October-March travel.
Day 4: Munnar Hills and Scenic Mountain Escape
Stay: Munnar hill station
Disembark early. The drive from the Kollam backwater area to Munnar takes around five hours depending on route and stops, and you want to be on the road before the day gets hot.
The drive is the whole story of Day 4 until you arrive. On the way to Munnar, enjoy tea estates, cool hills, and waterfalls.
Valara is a few kilometres further and quieter in setting. Both are roadside and worth 20 minutes each.
Check in and rest. The altitude shift and the drive are enough for one day. Most good Munnar properties have estate walking trails — an evening walk through the tea rows with the chill coming in as the sun drops is a better introduction to the place than any organised excursion.
Top Station near Munnar offers beautiful hill views into Tamil Nadu. Check road conditions before visiting.
Munnar is also where Ayurvedic treatments make the most sense. Kerala is the actual home of this tradition, and the better properties here have qualified practitioners rather than spa staff doing a wellness menu. A relaxing couples’ Ayurvedic session is a great experience in Munnar.
Day 5: Relaxation, Spa, and Departure
Stay: Munnar (morning) / Kochi (evening, if needed for flight)
Keep the morning in Munnar. The mistake most people make is packing the last day with activity when what the last day actually calls for is time.
If you haven't done the Ayurvedic session yet, book it for this morning. Many properties offer couples’ treatments before checkout. After exploring Munnar, return to Kochi and stay near Fort Kochi or the airport.
Last dinner in Kochi. The city has a real restaurant scene now — places doing contemporary local cuisine, traditional technique updated with thought. Ask your hotel for a current recommendation. Lists online go stale.
Best Experiences to Include for Couples
Kerala offers couples peaceful sunset cruises and private backwater experiences with fresh Kerala meals. Not a shared boat. Not a day cruise. An actual overnight, anchored away from the main routes, with someone cooking fresh regional dishes on board.
A Kathakali performance in Fort Kochi, watched from close enough to see the makeup work properly. Book in advance and attend the preparation process.
A spice garden walk in Munnar, done with an actual farmer rather than a tourist guide reading from a script. Ask your hotel for local recommendations. A couples’ Ayurvedic treatment and a peaceful backwater sunrise make the trip memorable.
Luxury Stay Recommendations for Honeymooners
Kerala offers stays for every budget, but luxury resorts and heritage stays are popular with couples.
In Munnar, the estate properties — those with actual working tea gardens on the grounds — give you access to the landscape in a way a town hotel doesn't. Walking your own estate at dawn before breakfast is different from driving to a viewpoint.
For the houseboat, premium means a private boat with one crew and one cook, anchoring in quieter stretches overnight. The difference in experience from a budget houseboat is significant.

Romantic Dining and Private Experiences
Kerala cuisine is a trip highlight. Enjoy a romantic dinner on the houseboat after sunset. Most will do this if you ask. Eating on open water after dark, with no other light around, is a meal experience that doesn't require a restaurant.
In Munnar, several properties arrange private dinners in the tea estate at sunset — a table set among the rows, food brought out from the kitchen. This is the kind of thing that requires calling ahead and asking specifically, but the properties that do it do it well.
In Kochi on the last night, the better contemporary Kerala restaurants are doing things worth trying — regional cooking reconstructed with modern technique. Ask for updated recommendations, as places can change.
Honeymoon Travel Tips for Couples
October to March is the best time to visit Kerala. Hiring a private car with a driver makes travel easier.
This is especially important for the Munnar road, which requires someone who knows the mountain sections. The cost is reasonable relative to what it removes from your logistical burden.
Book your houseboat at least three months early during peak season. Go through a proper operator. The difference between a well-managed premium houseboat and a cheap one is not small.
Pack a light layer for Munnar. The evenings get genuinely cold at 1,600 metres and most couples are not prepared for this coming from the coast.
Don't over-schedule. The days in this itinerary have room in them deliberately. Take your time and enjoy the journey. Keep some cash handy for smaller shops in Fort Kochi.

Why Fragrant Nature Hotels & Resorts Is Ideal for Honeymoon Stays
Most properties in Kerala promise a scenic setting. Fragrant Nature Hotels & Resorts actually deliver on it — and that distinction matters when you're planning something as specific as a honeymoon.
The group’s properties are well located for this itinerary, with stays in both Kollam and Munnar. Both sit within the landscape rather than just near it, which changes the daily experience of staying there significantly.
In Kollam, the Fragrant Nature property sits on Ashtamudi Lake. The rooms face the water. The property offers private boat rides, local specialties, beautiful views, and a peaceful stay for couples.
Book through the property directly or through a travel consultant who knows them. Either way, ask specifically about honeymoon arrangements — the staff here are used to the request and have options worth knowing about before you arrive.
Plan your Kerala honeymoon with Fragrant Nature Hotels & Resorts for a peaceful stay across the backwaters and hills.
