Onam Festival
History
Mahabali was a demon king whose rule was so just that Vishnu got nervous about losing relevance among the gods. Then Vishnu appeared as a Dwarf, Vamana, and requested Mahabali for three steps of land. Mahabali said yes. Vamana grew until his step touched the earth and the other his step touched the sky. For the third step, he put his foot on Mahabali's head and sent him underground. Moved by what Mahabali had given up, Vishnu granted him one visit home a year. Onam is the visit. He comes back to Kerala every year. The myth is not as old as the festival. Onam is mentioned in the Sangam period, and by roughly 800 CE, under the Kulasekhara Perumals, the whole month of Chingam had turned into Onam season.
Celebrations
Ten days, Atham to Thiruvonam. In 2026, Atham will be on 17th August, Thiruvonam will fall on Wednesday, August 26, and four public holidays will be declared around Thiruvonam by the Kerala government. These 10 days will be filled with the following:- Pookalam - flower carpets outside homes, which became more ornate as days went by.
- Onasadya – banana leaf feast, which unfolds over 20 dishes, avial, thoran, olan, kaalan, erissery, pappadam, topped with payasam.
- Pulikali – performers dressed as tigers roam through the streets, ripping up the streets.
- Vallamkali – snake boat races on the backwaters
- Onakkodi – new clothes, gifted across the family
Best Places to Experience Onam
Thripunithura opens the whole festival with the Athachamayam procession. Thrissur owns Pulikali. The backwater belt around Alappuzha hosts the boat races. Base yourself in Kochi or Munnar. Rituals
Theyyam translates to "form of god," and that's not poetic license. A performer, usually from a specific caste and trained from childhood, puts on face paint, a towering headdress, and, in some forms, actual fire, and becomes the deity for the duration of the ritual. Devotees line up for blessings from someone they'd never approach any other day of the year. Over 400 Theyyam forms exist, and around 100 are still commonly performed.
The season opens on the tenth day of Thulam, roughly late October, and closes in Edavam, late May into early June. November through March is peak.
Where to Witness Theyyam
Kannur and Kasaragod. That's the list. Wayanad picks up some overflow, nothing more. Performances happen at village shrines called kavus, usually before sunrise, and most cost nothing to attend. Show up with respect and modest dress, and you're in.
Thrissur Pooram
Elephant Processions
Thrissur Pooram is a 36-hour festival that takes place around Vadakkunnathan Temple. It was started by Sakthan Thampuran in 1798, after his temples were shut out of a rival pooram. He built a bigger one out of spite. It worked, and he resolved to raise a larger one out of spite. It worked. The Ilanjithara Melam, a performance by hundreds of drummers, builds for hours before any elephant moves.
Fireworks
The highlight for most is the exchange of ceremonial umbrellas between the performers of the two sides, a fast competitive process where each one is more elaborate than the previous one, done over the backs of the elephants, the Kudamattam. The fireworks then close out on Thekkinkadu Maidan in the early morning, which they say is one of the biggest in India. It all takes place during the Malayalam month of Medam, typically in April.
If you are based in Kochi, this is a day trip (1.5-2 hours by road). It's among the few festivals here that you can actually fold into a Fragrant Nature Kochi hotel.
Vishu
The Malayalam New Year falls around April 14. The central ritual is Vishukkani – rice, fruit, gold coins and Kanikonna flowers – arranged the night before and first viewed at dawn, which is thought to set the tone for the coming year. Elders give money to children as a blessing. A feast follows. In contrast to Theyyam and Pongala, Vishu is not a district-specific festival; it is a state-wide festival instead.
Nehru Trophy Boat Race
The race is traditionally held on the second Saturday of August, at Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha. The origin story is more compelling than most marketing teams could come up with: Nehru observed a village boat race in 1952, and now it's a part of the Champions Boat League. The Chundan vallams are snake boats over 100 feet long with over 100 oarsmen each competing in front of the two lakh and more members of the public.Aranmula Boat Race
All the same aspects, different spirit. Palliyodams (sacred snake boats) glide, not race, on the Pampa River, close to the Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple, accompanied by boat songs, Vanchipattu, which are sung at a slow and ceremonial pace.
