Kayaks and canoes can, and they're slower and quieter besides. That's how you get to see the coir-making units, fish farms and village life, not from a distance.

If you can choose only one, the canoe wins for the village-life part of this trip. If you want to focus on the water itself, the mangroves, and the open lake stretch, then you should look at the country cruise.

What you'll see down the canals

Narrow water passages join the eight islets, some of which are only wide enough for two canoes to pass. Along them:

Add a village walk or a simple local meal afterward.
