15 Must-Visit Places in Kerala for an Unforgettable Holiday

Most places to visit in Kerala lists throw fifteen locations at you with zero regard for geography. You come to love the list and loathe the itinerary because half of these places are 4 hours away by road. This guide classifies all 15 places based on the easiest path to reach them from the highland areas around Munnar, the coast around Kochi, or the backwaters around Kollam. Determine your foundation and construct your days on top of it. That's all there is. It just so happens that Fragrant Nature has a location in each of these three areas, so no matter where you end up, it will only take you a short distance to get anywhere on this list.

The trouble with list titles such as “Top 15 Places to Visit in Kerala” is that they oversimplify the state. Kerala is not just one place. It behaves in three places. The hill country runs on tea gardens, cold mornings, and roads that take longer to drive than the map suggests. Kochi is a port city with colonial layers stacked on top of each other, easy to walk, dense with things to see in a small radius. Kollam is flat and slow. It's a backwater land, and the water has an entirely different tempo.

A traveler who books a week in Kerala based on a generic top-15 list often ends up:
  • Driving 5 to 6 hours between zones more than once
  • Missing golden hour at a viewpoint because the drive ran long
  • Cramming a backwater cruise and a hill trek into the same day and enjoying neither
The fix isn't a better list. It's a differently organized one. Pick a base, see everything nearby properly, then move to the next zone if you want. That's how people who actually live here travel, and it's how Fragrant Nature's three hotels happen to be positioned.

Munnar in the Rain

Base 1: Munnar - for hills, tea, and cold air

Fragrant Nature Munnar sits in the hill country. Everything below is a reasonable day trip from here.

  • Eravikulam National Park. Home to the Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered mountain goat found almost nowhere else outside the Western Ghats, and Anamudi, the highest peak of South India. It is about 45 minutes from Munnar town. Please note the park is closed for a few weeks around calving season (January to February).
  • Top Station. A viewpoint on the Tamil Nadu border with a wide view over the Western Ghats. Best early morning, before the mist rolls in.
  • Mattupetty Dam. Popular for boating and photography, set against tea-covered hills.
  • Kolukkumalai tea estate. One of the highest tea plantations in the world. The road up is rough, but worth it for sunrise over the plantation rows.
  • Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. About 65 km away, it has a drier, scrubbier landscape than the rest of Munnar. Worth the drive if you're staying a few days and want a change of scenery.

Base 2: Kochi - for heritage, water, and walkable streets

Fragrant Nature Kochi puts you on the historic waterfront. Most of these are walkable or a short drive away.

  •  Fort Kochi and the Chinese fishing nets. The most photographed stretch of the city, best seen at sunset when the nets are lowered.
  • Mattancherry Palace and Jew Town. Old spice-trade architecture and antique shops packed into a few streets.
  • Cherai Beach. About an hour from central Kochi, a quieter beach with backwaters running close to the shoreline.
  • Marine Drive. A promenade along the harbour, good for an evening walk with the boats coming in.
  • Hill Palace Museum. About 10 km outside the city, a 20-to-30-minute drive, is the former home of the Cochin royal family, now the largest archaeological museum in the state.

Base 3: Kollam - for backwaters, quiet, and Ayurveda.

Fragrant Nature Kollam is located on Ashtamudi Lake. This zone is the slowest of the three, and that's the point.

  • Ashtamudi Lake. Kerala's second-largest lake and the starting point for most backwater cruises in this region. Quieter and less commercial than Alleppey.
  • Munroe Island. A cluster of eight small islets where Ashtamudi Lake meets the Kallada River. Best explored by canoe past coir-making villages and mangrove-lined canals. The Kollam District Tourism Promotion Council runs canal cruises twice a day.
  • Thangassery Lighthouse and beach. Colonial-era lighthouse with a quieter beach beside it, good for a low-key afternoon.
  • Palaruvi Waterfalls. About 75 km from Kollam town, a solid day trip if you want a break from flat water.
  • Thenmala. The first-ever planned eco-tourism site in India, built around a dam and reservoir. If you want some action on land, there are adventure activities here.

Which base should you pick?

If you only have one stop, pick based on what you actually want:
  • Cold air, tea gardens, trekking → Munnar
  • Heritage streets, culture, easy walking → Kochi
  • Water, quiet, Ayurveda and wellness → Kollam
If you have the time, the classic order is hills to coast to backwaters, or the reverse. Either direction works. What doesn't work is avoiding all three zones in under a week and spending most of your trip in a car.

Plan it properly

You don't need to sequence fifteen destinations on your own. You have to change bases while traveling, but you don't have to change hotels or standards.

Fragrant Nature operates a hotel in each of these three zones. Contact Fragrant Natureto make an itinerary based on what you want to see, rather than whatever happens to top a generic list.
