Kochi Water Metro guide for tourists: routes, fares and scenic rides
Kochi Water Metro has two lines into the city’s heritage quarters: High Court to Fort Kochi and High Court to Mattancherry. The boats are electric and can carry up to 100 passengers, slipping across the harbour between the islands and the mainland. When you come to the terminal list, the problems begin.
- Fort Kochi and Mattancherry each have a boat service to the High Court. Neither Water Metro line connects to the other, so a day that includes both requires either a detour through High Court or a road transfer.
- Mattancherry has a Water Metro terminal and an older State Water Transport Department jetty. On 11 October 2025, the Water Metro terminal opened.
- Fares and times are subject to change. Check them on the Kochi One app or at the counter before making plans around the final one.
There are 15 routes and 75+ kilometres. In October 2025, the state was tendering the Edakochi and Thoppumpady terminals and completing three more at Kumbalam, Kadamakudy and Paliyamthuruth.
The official terminal list has ten names. Kakkanad is said to be an IT and industrial hub, Eloor an industrial area, and Cheranalloor a suburb. If your hotel isn't near any of them, skip all three.
Two more snares catch visitors:
- Fort Kochi and Mattancherry appear to be in the same vicinity on a map. The boats ignore that.
- Mattancherry had a ferry before the Water Metro arrived. The State Water Transport Department restarted its service in early 2025 after a gap of close to six years, and it sailed at high tide only because silt had choked the channel. The Water Metro terminal is a separate structure near Mattancherry Corporation Park.

Routes that matter to a visitor
Three lines carry tourists:- High Court to Fort Kochi. The terminal is close to Fort Kochi beach, and St. Francis Church in the neighbourhood as well as the Santa Cruz Basilica.
- High Court to Mattancherry. It opened on 11 October 2025, together with a terminal on Willingdon Island. The Mattancherry terminal is located on Jew Town Road, close to Mattancherry Palace. The line was designed with a Willingdon Island halt.
- High Court to Vypin. Vypin is a place of beaches, lagoons and fishing villages. From Fort Kochi or Mattancherry, you change boats at High Court, so budget for two crossings.
Points of friction to resolve before boarding
- Look for the name of the operator on the jetty. There are two ferry stations in Mattancherry, one of which is operated by the Water Metro.
- Don’t ask for the last boat out after crossing; ask for it before crossing.
- Have a Kochi One card or install its app before getting to the pier.
- Do not assume that the Willingdon Island halt is live until customer care tells you so.

Tickets and fares
Fares are subject to change and depend on the route, and the operator sets them. Ask at the counter or open the Kochi One app. The Kochi One card and app work on the water and on Kochi’s metro rail, so one card covers both.Three rides worth the ticket
The boats are air-conditioned and fitted with wide windows onto the backwaters. That is all the record promises about scenery, so the picks below follow the sights.- High Court to Fort Kochi. Board near Marine Drive, the Rainbow Bridge and the Kerala High Court. Step off at Fort Kochi, home to the waterfront and the Chinese fishing nets, which is a Fort Kochi attraction.
- High Court to Mattancherry. Board the bus on Jew Town Road and walk to Mattancherry Palace.
- A chartered boat. The operator’s site lists a boat booking service for events and trips. Ask customer care for rates and availability.

A two-day plan that respects the lines
- Day one: High Court to Mattancherry and back. Take a day trip to Jew Town Road and Mattancherry Palace, then return to the mainland.
- Day two: High Court to Fort Kochi and back. Spend the day at the two churches, the nets, and the waterfront.
